Puerta de Alcalá
Plaza de la Independencia · 7 min walk
A neoclassical gate raised in 1778 for King Carlos III, once the formal eastern edge of Madrid.
Look closely at the upper face: the pockmarks are Civil War shrapnel scars, left unrepaired on purpose. Stand on the traffic island for the head-on view, then walk two minutes east into Retiro Park. Best after sunset, when the floodlights come on.
